The Battle of B-R5RB Destroyed $300,000 Worth of Virtual Ships. CCP Published the Bill.
Covers the January 2014 EVE Online battle — triggered by a missed sovereignty payment — using CCP's own post-battle report, which listed ship losses in ISK and their real-money equivalents. A narrative account of a documented event whose economics CCP chose to make public.

One system, twenty-one hours, and a destruction figure its own operator published.

A missed sovereignty payment triggered the largest battle in EVE Online history. CCP Games then itemised the damage.

A Lapsed Bill Brought Two Coalitions to a Dead System
On 27 January 2014, an automated sovereignty payment lapsed in the B-R5RB star system — an administrative failure by a member of the Pandemic Legion alliance — and the system flipped to neutral. The Halloween War, already months old, gave the opposing CFC (Clusterfuck Coalition) the opening it needed: sovereignty was claimed within hours, and both sides escalated through the night and into the following day.
The battle ran for roughly 21 hours. At its height it drew more than 7,500 player characters into a single system, a figure CCP Games confirmed in its official post-battle report ↗. To manage the load, CCP applied Time Dilation — its server-side throttle that slows in-game time to prevent node collapse — stretching a single combat second into as many as ten real ones.
CCP Chose to Publish the Damage in Two Currencies
What made B-R5RB a genre-defining document rather than a genre-defining event was CCP's decision to account for the losses publicly. The post-battle report listed destruction in ISK, EVE Online's in-game currency, and then converted those figures to real-money equivalents using the then-current PLEX exchange rate — PLEX being the game's tradeable subscription token. The resulting headline: approximately 11 trillion ISK destroyed, equivalent to roughly $300,000 USD, or around 2,900 years of in-game time if measured in subscription months.

Most of the figures on this site were first said out loud in a hall like this, in a slide with a version number on it.

Titan-class ships, EVE's largest and most expensive hulls, bore the bulk of the loss. Seventy-five Titans were confirmed destroyed — the majority belonging to Pandemic Legion and its allies — against eleven on the CFC side. Each Titan represents weeks or months of player effort to manufacture and deploy.
The $300,000 figure is widely cited precisely because CCP supplied it. No third-party estimate was required; the developer denominated virtual destruction in dollars and handed the number to every journalist who covered it. That editorial choice did more for EVE's public profile than any marketing spend, and it set a precedent — the idea that EVE Online's player-driven economy produces consequences measurable against real-world costs — that the game has traded on ever since.
